Early Saturday morning, reports emerged of significant explosions rocking Tehran, following statements from Israel that it had conducted a preventative strike.
Loud Blasts and Smoke Reported in the Heart of Tehran
According to eyewitness accounts, two powerful explosions were heard in Tehran on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, columns of dense smoke were observed billowing over central and eastern districts of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of these blasts indicates that this is a strike involving missiles,” one news agency stated, though it did not initially provide further details.
Context: Rising Tensions and Recent Events
The incident occurs against a background of sharply increased tensions in the region. Major developments preceding this strike involve:
- US Military Buildup: A significant build-up of American warships in the Middle East, including the movement of aircraft carriers.
- Nuclear Talks: Recent talks between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with indications of more discussions scheduled.
- Official Rhetoric: Prior to the attack, a prominent American figure had labeled Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and delivered threats regarding its weapons development.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Reportedly, a time limit of roughly two weeks had been presented to Iran to resolve the nuclear dispute or face severe consequences.
Iranian Response
In response to earlier allegations, Iranian officials had accused the United States of spreading “big lies” about its missiles programme. They dismissed assertions about missile development and protest deaths as unfounded.
These developments is fluid, with additional reports expected as the situation develops.
